The existing methods for calculation of contact strength of solid bodies are discussed, and their comparative estimation is given. A new recommended technique for contact strength calculation for solids using ultimate contact loads is described in detail. In addition to the substantial simplification and the significant improvement of calculation precision, this method for calculation makes it possible for the first time to quantitatively determine the influence of the surface reinforcement of solid bodies on their contact strength. Examples of typical calculations of contact strength are presented for both plastically homogeneous solids and inhomogeneous contacting bodies with the surface reinforced layer.
