Abstract

Given the ever-increasing stringency of carbon dioxide emission requirements in the internal combustion engine sector, finding a solution that meets these requirements is becoming increasingly important. As a result, the use of carbon-free fuels is being con-sidered as an alternative to traditional fuels. In this article, the focus is on a 4-cylinder 7.6/7-liter spark-ignition engine (4Ch 7.6/7 type), and the use of ammonia as a carbon-free fuel that is directly injected into the engine's intake manifold in its liquid state. The article develops a mathematical model of an engine operating on ammonia, taking into account its thermodynamic and kinetic properties and the possibility of detonation. The results of the computational study of the engine's working process indicate that due to the low energy density of ammonia (0.73 kg/m3 at a pressure of 0.1 MPa, and a temperature of 298 K), the fuel consumption of a vehicle operating on a carbon-free fuel is higher than that of a vehicle operating on traditional fuel for covering the same distance. This increases the overall fuel consumption, resulting in reduced fuel efficiency. Next, a combination power system is used to improve the engine's economic efficiency. Three options for arranging the components of the combination power system are proposed. Compared to a conventional vehicle, the fuel consumption of an engine operating as part of a combination power system is reduced by 28.6 % for the third option, while it increases by 17.9 % and 32.1 % for the first and second options, respectively
